Tools

A set of different pieces of softwares and services that I use.

Phisolophy

I spend a lot of hours when choosing a set of tools and comparing them with n number of other tools, My choice is usually opensource tools and tools which do one particular job really good, are fast, efficent on resources, have scope of future development and current state is good enough for significant timeout. There could be personal preference of other person though I seek customization, and my prefered use case. Like I use Logseq for note taking, most people might use Notion or Obsidion( the right rival to it). though I felt Logseq to be best for me. As for Notion, I plan on using AppSmith when sharing some notes with others and collaboration.

Day To Day

  • VSCodium for local code editor or text editing
  • Brave is my main browser, though I also use Chromium depends on use case. Some sites break in Brave.
  • Logseq for Note taking, Its really good and allows me to add take notes of random idea, without worrying about organizing the notes
  • OBS Studio Obs Studio for recording Audio/Video or Just recording screen
  • Google Meet for meetings, allows me to connect voice and video from Ipad and sharing screen over desktop in companion mode.
  • Duck Duck Go is my primary search engine as of now.
  • Bitwarden as my password manager from past 5-6 years after moving from Lastpass.
  • Pocket, its the best Read Later, maybe because I am using it from 10+ years. I use it less frequently recently, it still is best for me
  • Excalidraw, THE BEST DIAGRAMING TOOL, Its so good, I have fallen for it completely, I do wireframes on same, I even use it as my whiteboard during explanations and draw a lot of diagrams on it. It has best features out there. It has made really good progress since its release. I am glad to be its one of the most early adoptors. It has extension for VS Code as well.

Development

  • Even though VSCodium I use as text editor, I do all my code development on Code-Server which is hosted on my desktop and acessible over internet. It makes very easy to switch between devices
  • DBeaver for accessing databases, I also use SQL Tools extension in Code-Server/VS Code
  • I heavily use Docker for easy of development
  • Conda for python environment management.
  • Just like most of tech lover, I too moved from windows to linux due to slow hardware. Linux makes really good use of resource and I am using Ubuntu as my primary operating system. I have dual boot So I do use Windows once is a very long while.

Tech Stack

  • This is just preference, changes based upon use-case
  • My first language is Python, then C#, Typescript and then anything based upon usecase, Java for Android, or some Scala or VB# legacy project
  • Having said above I want to move to RUST making it my Second Language, Hope to catchup with rest of Rustaceans SOON....
  • Clickhouse is my primary OLAP database
  • InfluxDB for timeseries database, Though I would like to check new tools. Would be checking TimescaleDB soon for some project.
  • Metabase for Data Visualization, It serves my purpose
  • Plotly for data visualization through some coding, Like when Metabase is not available in organization then, and you cant allowed to use it.
  • React & Angular. I prefer React over Angular. And might choose Flutter for UI. Never use Flutter btw, just based upon its features I am saying
  • The Primary CI/CD Tools that I use day today are - Jenkins, GitActions, Gitness (former Drone), Nomad, Terraform.
  • Hashicorp Tools for Infrastructure, I love their products they are sleek and do their job. Terraform, Nomad, Consul, Vault are my primary.
  • Do check all the services that I have hosted on my DevHomeLab
